Professor Farnelli is an Associate Professor of International Law at the Department of Legal Studies of the University of Bologna. He also serves as a visiting lecturer at the University of Antwerp and Palacký University Olomouc. Professor Farnelli has contributed to numerous high-profile international legal proceedings, including:
M/V Norstar (ITLOS Case No. 25),
Germany v. Italy: Jurisdictional Immunities of the State (ICJ), and
Ukraine v. Russian Federation: Allegations of Genocide under the Genocide Convention (ICJ).
He has participated as a legal advisor in both inter-state and investor-state disputes, and was a member of the Italian delegation to the Fifth Intergovernmental Conference on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction under the UNCLOS framework.
His research and publications cover a wide range of topics, including the law of the sea, environmental law, State immunity, international investment law, and international adjudication.
In his keynote address, Professor Farnelli will explore the historical background of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, focusing on the origins and evolution of the Palestinian issue, with particular attention to the legal implications of the occupation of the Palestinian Territories. The lecture will also examine the relevant principles and norms of international law applicable to the events that followed October 7, 2023.
A Q&A session will follow the keynote, providing attendees with the opportunity to engage in a discussion.
